Can't install TaggTool 5 - Doesn't see Java

RobW 9 years ago updated by phillip 9 years ago 22
I'm trying to install on Win7 x64 system that's located on an air gap network (no internet access). The TaggTool 5 Server Setup window tells me that I need Java Runtime Environment. Using a different machine, I downloaded it, transferred it to the air gap network, installed it on the Win7 machine, rebooted, and tested it by opening a cmd window and typing java -version. It replied:
java version "1.8.0_45"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_45-b15)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-bit Server VM (build 25.45-b02, mixed mode)

Now I rerun the TaggTool5Server64.exe and I still get the TaggTool 5 Server Setup window listing the prerequisite Java Runtime Environment. Under version it says, "Required: 1.5 or higher. Found: nothing."

Obviously, it doesn't see my JRE install. Help.

Hi, I have updated the installers to fix this, please re-download from Taggtool Beta

Thanks for reporting this issue.

I downloaded Taggtool5Server64NoJava.exe, copied it to my air-gap computer, ran the install, and still no joy. The Taggtool 5 Server Setup Wizard appears and the status bar progresses to the right until it reaches about 80% where it says Starting Services. It sits there for about five minutes then I get a new popup titled Taggtool 5 Server that says:

Service 'Taggtool 5 Server' (Taggtool.exe) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.

I click the Retry button and, after five more minutes, I get the same popup. I opened Process Explorer and I can see, under services.exe, that Taggtool.exe tries to start a few times.

That bit about "sufficient privileges" may be the problem. I'm installing this on my work computer and our IT department keeps tight controls on things. However, I had no trouble installing the desktop search program called "Everything" which runs as a service. I can see Everything.exe in Process Explorer under services.exe.

I tried running Taggtool5Server64NoJava.exe as administrator and I get the same results.

Any ideas?
ok, I'll try to replicate.

thanks
Unable to reproduce on Win 7 non admin user, can you provide some system specs?

thanks
Okay, I ran Save Report from CPU-Z and got a big list of system specs. Here are the main points:

Is there a way I can manually launch the taggtool service from the command line?
I ran into the same problem during install. While it was in the starting service loop, I popped into the folder I installed to and manually ran Taggtool 5.exe and got a dialog telling me Java couldn't be found. Selected the correct install path and then waited for it to retry and it completed install.

The service just immediately exits after starting though.
I followed Alain's instructions and got the same results he described, namely, Taggtool successfully installs, a browser window opens automatically to http://myhostname:83/index.html, but the page says: "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage." I can't see the taggtool service listed in Process Explorer.

In Windows Task Manager, Services tab, Taggtool 5.exe is shown as "Stopped". If I try to start the service manually I get a popup that says: Unable to Start Service - Access is denied.
hi, could you try the following:

How to Configure the Service to Start Up with the Built-in System Account

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Administrative Tools.
  2. Double-click Services.
  3. Right-click the appropriate service, and then click Properties.
  4. On the Log On tab, click Local System Account, and then click Apply.

NOTE: You typically do not need to configure a service to interact with the desktop, so you can leave the Allow service to interact with desktop check box unselected.
  5. On the General tab, click Start to restart the service.
  6. Quit the Services tool.
I followed your instructions to the letter. Note that in step 4, Local System Account was already selected, but I selected it again. When I press Start in step 5, I get a popup titled Services that says:

The Taggtool 5 Server service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs.

So I tried changing the Startup Type to Manual but I get the same result.
thanks, is there anything in the output.log file?
also, can enter java -version into a command prompt and tell me the result.
The output.log file is empty (0 bytes) and the java version is:

java version "1.8.0_45"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_45-b15)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-bit Server VM (build 25.45-b02, mixed mode)
I was able to get it working:

1) uninstall TaggTool Server,
2) Install the 32 bit JRE
3) reinstall TaggTool server (64bit) WITH the JRE
great, thanks for the update.
Alain, you're a genius! I followed your instructions and everything just works. Thanks.
I've just spotted an issue in the installer - one of the files was being configured for 32 bit not 64.

Thanks again for feedback.
Please add version numbers to the download files so I can tell that there's a new version to try. Thanks.

Hello, my installation failed twice, the first time I installed in an alternative directory ( not C: ), the second in the default directory C: - The installer fails in activating the Taggtool Service, it says you have not enough privilege to run. I have Java RE 8u45 x64, so of course I installed Taggtool without Java. I am on a Asus Sabertooth X58, 24GB RAM, Intel Core i7-930. I have read Alain's post about installing 32-bit JRE, I think you shouldn't be forced to do that, the installer should work with 64-bit JRE in a 64-bit computer. I will give a try to Taggtool with Java.
Hello, the installation this time was successful, I have installed Taggtool with Java 64-bit version, de-selecting Java component during the installation, without having to install 32-bit or any other Java, just keeping my JRE 8u45 x64. This is quite odd, because in this manner the installation should be exactly the same as the previous one, Taggtool without Java, but so it goes.
Why the installer of Taggtool without Java behaves differently from the installer of Taggtool with Java deselected?
Hello, there was a problem with the installer config which I fixed for 64bit with java - I have just applied the same fix to the 64bit without java. I have uploaded corrected versions.
